Boric acid is quite often added to mixtures containing aluminium to act as a buffer to stop the alkali reaction accelerating. It is especially important to include boric acid when the composition contains barium nitrate or if it is being made up into a paste with water.
Boric acid is also a popular liquid flame colourant, if dissolved in methanol, or meths, it will give an excellent green flame.
