Iron Filings
Iron filings available in two grades:
Our dark iron filings are a recycled iron product manufactured from cleaned and processed drilling swarf from iron and mild steel, containing over 96% iron.
Our bright iron filings are a synthetic product manufactured by decomposing iron pentacarbonyl. Also known as carbonyl iron, they consist of highly purified, spherical grey metallic iron particles.

We stock two types of Iron Filings:
Physical Characteristics:
Protective Coating:
It should be noted that iron filings will rust in oxidising conditions unless coated with a suitable agent, Linseed oil is recommended for this.
Applications:
Magnetitism Experiments:
Iron filings are widely used in magnetism experiments and demonstrations. When placed in the presence of a magnetic field, the filings align themselves along the magnetic field lines, providing a visual representation of the magnetic field's shape and strength.
Educational Demonstrations:
Due to their magnetic properties, iron filings are commonly used in education to visualise magnetism and magnetic fields.
Art and Craft:
Iron Filings can be mixed with other materials to create textured surfaces.
Industrial and Scientific Applications
Iron Filings can be used in experiments or industrial applications that require magnetism.
Metalwork and Metallurgy:
Iron filings may be used in metalwork or metallurgical applications for testing and analyzing the properties of metals or alloys.Specifications
