Potassium nitrate is an oxidising salt in the form of a white powder which can be dissolved in water. Two variants are available to buy, both with the same chemical purity, one grade has been milled to a very fine powder, and the other is a coarse grade that is 20 - 80 mesh. Potassium nitrate is commonly used to provide the oxygen for combustion in pyrotechnics formulations.

Applications

Oxidiser- At high temperatures, especially in the presence of a reducer, potassium nitrate will decompose, liberating oxygen and promoting combustion. It is the main component of the pyrotechnic composition Black Powder, a formulation that has been in use since the 9th Century. Wood, charcoal, paper, tobacco and many other material can be treated with potassium nitrate to improve comustion.

Fertiliser - A source of potassium and nitrogen (NPK 13-0-44), both vital for leaf, stem and root growth as well as disease resistance. It is applied as a solution in water to plants in soil and aquariums.

Food - This potassium nitrate has not been declared fit for food use.

Tree Stump removal - The decay of wood is caused by fungi, potassium nitrate can be used to provide the best possible environment for fungal growth and wood decay. Cut the stump as close to the ground as possible and drill several large holes deep into the wood, then liberally apply potassium nitrate powder to the stump and down the holes. Keep the stump moist to provide best conditions.
